The University of Luton and De Montfort University's Bedford
campus combined forces in August 2006 to create the new University.
The University of Bedfordshire is the largest higher education institution in
the county, providing excellent opportunities for more people to access top
quality higher education. They work closely with employers on their curriculum,
while forging close links with UK companies to provide a broad range of training
and accredited industry programmes.
With large campuses in Luton and Bedford, the University is the single, major
provider of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education in
Bedfordshire.
Mission statement
The University is
determined to establish an excellent reputation for high-quality and vocational
distinctiveness, and is committed to:
-
providing innovative
opportunities to participate in higher education for all those able to
benefit;
-
giving a strong regional
presence, consistent with the lifelong learning needs of individuals, groups
and employers within a socially diverse community;
-
helping all their students and
staff to attain their full potential.
Student Life
It might be your first
taste of independence, or maybe you're taking a few years off work to gain a
qualification.
Whatever your situation, the University of Bedfordshire is a great place to make
new friends and broaden your horizons.
The University provides a diverse environment with a rich mix of students of all
ages from all cultural and social backgrounds.
Accommodation
One of the best aspects of becoming a student is the opportunity to live
independently. Living away from home can be fun but it can take a little getting
used to. The easiest way to set about adapting to this new way of life is to
live in the halls of residence provided by the University.
University of Bedfordshire offer purpose built accommodation to all their
first-year undergraduate students at Bedford campus and Luton campus.
Accommodation at Bedford campus
Most first year students are moving away from home for
the first time. You can be sure that at the Bedford campus you will have
comfortable and safe accommodation where you will be able to relax, meet new
friends, party and, of course, study!
The Student Services
Centre at Bedford will help you find the right accommodation before your course
begins, so your new home will be waiting for you when you arrive.
Bedford campus parking for students
Parking at the
University's Bedford campus (Polhill and Lansdowne sites) is very limited, and
likely to remain so during the 2006/07 campus building works. However, They have
invested heavily in alternatives, so that many students will find there is no
need to go to the expense of buying and running a car.
Personal
safety
Your welfare and personal safety are important to us.
All halls have CCTV systems. The majority of halls have electronic entry systems
and intercoms. There is a member of staff in the halls at night who can be
contacted in the event of an emergency.
Hall welcome evening
During the hall Welcome Evening,
new students attend a talk from their Security Department about personal safety
and the security of their belongings in University buildings, at home and out
and about in the town. The Bedford campus message is one of prevention and
common sense.
All halls of residence
have fully-furnished kitchens and spacious lounge areas. Most of the bedrooms
have internet access and en-suite facilities. All halls have state-of-the-art
security systems, and on-site management is on hand to help with any queries.
Accommodation at Bedford is located centrally, within a short distance of
lectures and nights out.
Special contract
Accommodation needs for students who have left the public care system can often
prove to be a barrier to a successful and rewarding student experience.
University of Bedfordshire is keen to assist students from this background and
some halls are able to offer 52 week contracts.
Accommodation at Luton campus
At Luton campus they offer individual study
bedrooms in the purpose-built halls of residence. All utility costs are included
in the weekly rent and all the rooms have internet access. There are also
several flats designed for students with disabilities. The halls are within easy
walking distance of the main University of Bedfordshire Luton campus at Park
Square, Luton town centre.
