ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY :
The University of Canterbury is located in Christchurch, the
largest city in New Zealand's South Island.

MISSION :
The University of Canterbury comprises its staff, students,
graduates and alumni. The University of Canterbury Act 1961
describes the purpose of the University as existing “for the
advancement of knowledge and the dissemination and maintenance
thereof by teaching and research.” This is carried through to
the Education Act 1989 and informs the mission of the
University.

the international community of scholars is to advance knowledge
by research; to maintain and disseminate this knowledge through
teaching, publications and critical debate; to confirm outcomes
through the awarding and conferring of degrees, diplomas and

HISTORY :
When established in 1873, Canterbury College, as the University
was originally known, was only the second university in New
Zealand. Housed in graceful stone buildings on a central city
block, it was dependent for survival on rents from high country
farms with which it had been endowed by the Canterbury
Provincial Council.

Christchurch is New Zealand's most affordable major city and
offers a range of accommodation options throughout the year,
including:

Halls of Residence
There are a total of six Halls of Residence at the University of
Canterbury. Some are catered (where meals are provided) and some
are self catered (meals are not provided).
If you want to live in one of the University's Halls of
Residence, you will need check which hall option you would
prefer and then complete all the required application steps
including submitting an online application form by the due date.

Flatting
(living in a private house or apartment with other students)
‘Flatting' involves sharing a house or apartment with one or
more people. People living in the ‘flat' normally take turns to
share duties such as cooking and cleaning.
If you choose this type of accommodation for your stay in New
Zealand - you will need to find your own flat when you arrive.
Be prepared to stay in temporary accommodation in New Zealand
when you first arrive (for example a motel or hostel) for at
least 2 weeks so you have time to find a suitable flat.
The Accommodation Office has a Flatting database of ‘Flatmates
Wanted' and ‘Properties Available' which may help you find a
room but you should view before signing up anywhere.

Homestay or Private
Board
Homestay accommodation is available close to the University and
throughout the city. The average cost of living with a NZ family
in a private home is NZD$210 per person per week. The fee covers
2 or 3 meals per day, a furnished room, power and local phone
calls. Some homestay families will do your laundry.
