Thames Valley University


Thames Valley University (
TVU) is a university for their region, working closely with local government, the Regional Development Agencies and regeneration bodies to enhance the social, cultural and economic lives of the communities they serve. The University is now the largest single source of skilled and qualified people for employers in the Thames Valley and West London. Thames Valley University became a university in 1992, but has over 140 years experience in technical and vocational education.

TVU's location gives students the best of both worlds. You can benefit from being:

  • within 20 minutes of central London - giving access to the culture, shopping, arts and entertainments of England's capital

  • near the open countryside of Berkshire and the Thames Valley

  • within 20 - 30 minutes of Heathrow airport.

TVU have three main campuses:

  • London (Ealing)

  • Slough

  • Reading

Ealing campus
Ealing campus was founded in 1860 as the Lady Byron School. Ealing has a green and leafy environment with more than 1,900 acres of park and open space. It is just 20 - 30 minutes on the London Underground from Central London.

Slough campus
Slough campus was founded in 1907 as an elementary school. Slough is a thriving town with Windsor Castle and Eton College situated nearby. The town centre offers an extensive range of big-name stores and independent shops, as well as restaurants, pubs and a multi-screen cinema.

Reading campus
Reading campus was formally Reading College and School of Arts & Design. Reading is a vibrant and lively town in the heart of the UK's 'Silicon Valley'. Shopping and leisure is easy, with the town centre and the Oracle Shopping Centre just ten minutes from the Kings Road site.

TVU is one of the UK's largest universities with over 44,000 students, from over 117 countries. They are a modern university with a long tradition. Learning Resources Centres

The Centres bring together library, media and computing facilities. They provide:

  • Fully-networked, open access work stations

  • Video and audio playback facilities

  • Full internet and remote database access

  • A large stock of specialist books, audio-visual material, music scores, slides and media equipment

  • Subscriptions to over 2000 periodical and journal titles, and access to thousands of others through internet subscriptions

  • Membership of library schemes to allow access and borrowing rights at other Higher Education institutions.

Student advice team

University offer TVU students a free and confidential professional advice service, covering practical issues such as:

  • International student issues, including immigration advice

  • State benefits

  • Housing rights

  • Sources of funding

  • Money management.

Disability team

TVU offer a confidential service to all students who have a disability. They can help you:

  • Disclose a special need/disability to tutors

  • Set up special needs support

  • Apply for Disabled Students Allowance

  • Arrange an assessment for dyslexia with an Educational Psychologist.

Sports facilities

They have excellent sporting facilities at their campuses:

  • Ealing
    There are many facilities, including a sports ground - incorporating a football pitch, a cricket wicket and a pavilion. Students can also use the small gym on the main campus.

  • Slough
    Students can benefit from a fully equipped gymnasium and fitness suite including a sauna.

  • Reading
    They have an activities centre and football pitch.

The sports office in the students' union is home to a wide variety of sports and recreational activities, including:

  • Football

  • Netball

  • Basketball

  • Jiu-jitsu

  • Boxing

  • Yoga.

Childcare

TVU's Reading campus has two on-site nurseries. Both have been awarded the Reading Quality Kitemark, confirming the high standard of care they provide to children. The nurseries are:

  • Little Owl Nursery, caring for babies from three months old to children aged five - for further information telephone 0118 967 5413

  • Tawny Nursery, caring for children from two-five years old.

Both nurseries operate a waiting list.
