London South Bank University

About The City

If you're planning to live away from home while studying, accommodation will be a major part of your expenditure. At South Bank, you have the choice of four modern, well appointed Halls of Residence. There is a wide range of rented accommodation available in London, whether you prefer to live alone or to share with other students. The Accommodation Office will help you with locating suitable accommodation and provide useful advice  and information.

Travel
London South Bank campuses are close to the tube at Elephant & Castle on the Northern and Bakerloo lines, Southwark on the Jubilee line and mainline stations at Waterloo, London Bridge and Elephant & Castle; bus routes from all over London stop close by.

Stock well tube and Wands worth Road mainline station serve the Wands worth Road campus (Built Environment). Harold Wood (Faculty of Health - Essex) is well served by trains from Liverpool Street - you can buy a through ticket from London tube stations.

The most economical way to travel is to buy a season ticket allowing unlimited travel on buses, trains and the London Underground. Fares vary according to the Zones through which you travel - Elephant & Castle is on the border of Zones 1/2 and Stockwell in Zone 2.

A Student Photocard will qualify you for special rates. You can enquire at any London Underground or mainline station or visit the Transport for London website for information about all rail and bus services including fares, timetables and travel advice.

Books, equipment and other course expenses
Course related costs like text books, special equipment and photocopying will also need to be included in your budget. Text books will vary according to the course you're on but your Course Director will be able to give you an idea of what your needs are likely to be. Don't rush out and buy the whole reading list straight away - you may be able to buy secondhand books from other students or share with other course members.

Field trips
Some courses include essential field or residential study trips in the UK or overseas for which there will be travel and accommodation charges. Your Course Director will be able to give you an idea of how much you'll need to budget for before you finalise your place.

Living
Don't forget - you'll also need to budget for everyday things like food, utility bills, clothing, and other personal expenses including leisure and entertainment.
1. Please note: Fees for all courses are reviewed annually and may change between one academic year and the next. The figures in this leaflet refer to the academic year 2002/03
2. Your LEA is the one that covers the area in which you live, not where you will be studying.
3. HNDs attract an additional registration fee, payable in the first year of study. Contact Student Finance for details. 4. All financial assistance referred to relates only to UK home students unless otherwise stated.
