Why Select |
Studying at university is very different from studying at
school. Less time is spent in formal classes and more is spent
on independent study.
To assist students to make the transition from school to
university, UCD provides an induction programme for all new
first year students. This takes place in the week prior to the
beginning of the academic year, and is designed to facilitate
students' entry to the University and to provide them with
important information about the academic support and level of
student service they can expect at UCD.
Throughout their years in UCD, students are given personal
assistance by lecturers, tutors and demonstrators to enable
them to make the optimum use of their learning opportunities.
They are also given a wide range of opportunities to develop
many different types of skills and to gain valuable experience
in different environments, from studying abroad to undertaking
work placements in degree- related professions and industries.
Teaching methods at UCD vary depending on the nature of the
course but are generally based on lectures which are supported
by tutorials, seminars, field work and laboratory practicals.
Lectures are formal talks on a particular aspect of a course
and are designed to stimulate students' thinking and reading.
In seminars and tutorials, small groups of students meet with
a member of staff to discuss particular subjects in depth and
to get advice on written or practical work. Laboratory
practicals and fieldwork exercises are especially important in
subject areas such as science and engineering, and they enable
students to put into practice the knowledge and techniques
learnt in lectures.
In all degree programmes, students are expected to devote a
considerable amount of time to reading and to preparing
written assignments, essays, laboratory reports and research
projects.

UCD places
a strong emphasis on promoting the European and
international dimension of studies. Every year, hundreds
of students from UCD gain valuable experience studying
abroad. UCD is now linked to over 150 universities
Europe-wide within the framework of the EU SOCRATES
programme. These partnerships provide UCD students with
the opportunity to study in European universities for one
year or one semester as part of their degree programme.
UCD also maintains an active programme of collaboration
with universities and third - level institutions worldwide
which enables students to study in many different
countries outside Europe.
