The main computer lab in the University Center has 53 PCs and 10 Macs
with the latest Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access and
PowerPoint), and all the major Internet platforms (Netscape, Internet Explorer,
FTP, etc.). There is also a Multimedia Lab where students can get one-on-one
help in creating web pages, digitizing material and developing skills on Word,
Excel, PowerPoint and Netscape Composer.
Mortvedt Library allows students to do almost everything
right from the Web: search the catalog for books, magazines, journals and other
media; use databases like EBSCO, Lexis-Nexus, JSTOR, WorldCat and ProQuest; and
link to online research material.
PLU is the only independent university in the Pacific Northwest that offers
an accredited computer science program through the Computer
Science Accreditation Commission of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board.
PLU offers specialized computer technology labs and software for
specific disciplines: biology and geosciences (an open lab and W.M.
Keck Observatory GIS Lab); chemistry and physics (open lab, Keck Lab and the
Chemistry Instruments Lab); computer science and computer engineering (19
computer student-only computers, a 25-machine advanced lab and an electronics
lab); and mathematics (17 Mac G4s in the mathematics ab).
The Morken Center For Learning and Technology-which will be
the new home for the School of Business, the Department of Mathematics, and the
Department of Computer Science & Computer Engineering-is generating a buzz.
The W.M. Keck Observatory is PLU's astronomical observatory.
It features a 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain reflecting telescope (one of the
largest in the region), a 17-foot retractable dome, a large-format digital
camera for research activities, and five 8-inch telescopes on permanent piers
for educational use. The Meade LX200 telescope and SBIG ST-8 camera is on the
Linux operating system, and can be operated from anywhere on the network.
Computer kiosks are accessible in public areas for quick
e-mail and Web access, as are wireless network connections for laptops.
Pederson/Stein Technology Enhanced Classroom, located in the
Hauge Administration Building, is equipped with computers, digital cameras, a
video camera and other computer equipment. It enables students to put together
digital reports and develop innovative programs for use in the classroom
setting.
