About The City

Dunedin is an historic and attractive city of 120,000 people, nestled at the end of the sheltered Otago harbour. White sand beaches and the green hills of the Otago Peninsula lie to the east, while the mountainous Otago province provides plenty of sports and recreational opportunities year round. Visitors can easily enjoy skiing, swimming, salmon fishing, tramping - even bungy jumping - all in or around the southern city.

People in Dunedin are renowned for their unique friendly and welcoming manner, which they proudly trace back to their city's Scottish origins.
The Scots also placed great importance on education, and the tradition lives on in the quality tertiary education institutions to which people now come from around the world. International students form a significant part of the city's large student population, benefiting from the completely integrated educational experience which is unique to Dunedin.

Otago Polytechnic is one of the three major tertiary education institutions in the heart of the city. This makes for a true campus environment, one where students live, study and mingle in the same safe and friendly neighborhood, only five minutes walk from the central business district.

Time out from study can be filled any one of many ways, because as well as an abundance of outdoor activities, Dunedin enjoys the benefits of metropolitan living and cultural facilities you would normally associate with a larger city. These include a modern cinema multiplex, a wide range of restaurants, live theatre, a newly built shopping mall and a world class art gallery.
