ACCOMMODATION
UCFV does not have on-campus housing (dormitories).
International students who require assistance finding
accommodation will be assisted by the International
Education Department. It is suggested that all
newly-arrived International students begin in Homestay.
Initially Homestay gives you a support system when you
first arrive. In addition, for English Second Language
students, the Homestay setting gives you the opportunity
to learn about Canada with the help of a Canadian host,
and opportunities for English conversation practice.
After a few months in Homestay you may feel that you are
ready for shared accommodation.
In Canada, both male and female young adults are
expected to look after their own personal needs such as
preparing their own breakfasts and bag lunches for
school, as well as being required to make your own bed,
vacuum your room and wash and iron your own clothes. In
addition you should be prepared to assist with household
chores, such as helping with meal preparation, setting
the table and helping to clean up afterwards. Prior to
coming to Canada, please be sure that you are able to do
these tasks.
HOMESTAY
Through homestay each student lives with a Canadian
family or individual who provides a private bedroom and
meals. Homestay hosts have been selected primarily
because they are eager to take part in a cultural
exchange. The hosts are as varied as the Canadian
people. They may be single parents, young families, or
people whose children are grown up. Most Canadian
families have small house pets (cats and/or dogs). In
homestay, you will be treated as a member of the family.
Cost is $550.00 per month. There is also a homestay
security deposit of $550.00 for Abbotsford; $500.00 for
Chilliwack.
PEERSTAY
In a peerstay arrangement each student lives with a
local Canadian resident in their apartment or house. The
student will have a furnished bedroom and will be
responsible for their own meals. The student will have
full use of the kitchen, will purchase and cook their
own food. In peerstay the student will have independence
and responsibility for themselves. Cost is $400.00 per
month.
Please read the attached Homestay Accommodation
Information, and Expectations About Personal Behavior
and Responsibility, as well as Expectations About Life
in a Canadian Household.
PRIVATE SUITES
When you feel you are ready to move from Homestay
into a private suite the International Education
Department can help you. They will refer you to the
housing registry in student services or the "for rent"
classified advertisements in the local newspapers. Cost
is a minimum of $500.00 per month for a one bedroom
suite. Most suites are unfurnished. Food, electricity
and telephone are additional costs.
