Billy Blue's real name is unknown but he is thought to have been
given the name it knows him by today because he had three small
rowing boats. England had three fleets during the Napoleonic
Wars. Each fleet was identified by the colours, red, white and
blue. The blue fleet was under the command of Sir William
Cornwallis who always flew a long blue pennant from the mizzen
mast on his flag ship. Among the fleets, and particularly in the
lower decks, Sir William's nickname was Billy Blue [Billy of the
Blue line].

Billy Blue, the man, first came
to public notice before the London courts in the late 1700;s
and arrived in Sydney as a convict in 1801. He was given a
seven year sentence for stealing a small amount of sugar. He
was thought to have been half American Indian, half African
black. He became good friends with Governor Macquarie, not
easy for a black ex con, then or now. He began a rowing boat
service connecting the south side of Sydney Harbour with the
north and was eventually given a grant of 80 acres at what
is now called Blues Point. At Blue's Point nowadays, you
can't buy the worst house in the street for a million bucks.

Billy Blue began in 1977 as a monthly magazine, publishing until
1990. The group then grew into a design and writing consultancy,
which in turn gave birth to the Billy Blue School of Graphic
Arts. The Billy Blue Group now includes four schools, a student
accommodation hostel and of course the graphic design
consultancy.

In 1987 Billy Blue Creative decided to
open a tiny design school to train people who would eventually work
at Billy Blue. A crowd of about four was expected. Sixty six people
enrolled and there was a long waiting list. The school evolved out
of the industry expertise of Billy Blue Creative making the unique
link between an active and successful design business and a school.

the right doors. There is graphic design, advertising, publishing,
internet design and packaging design. That's the whole industry
covered. Add an encouragement for creativity within the capitalist
system and you get the whole pencil.
Students come from all over the world to a dynamic creative
environment where they are trained to meet industry demands. Billy
Blue has used its industry knowledge to create an educational
environment that mirrors how most design and advertising agencies
operate. The School equips students with the practical skills they
