The University of Newcastle upon Tyne can trace its origins to a School of Medicine and Surgery, established in Newcastle in 1834.

Art Facilities

University of Newcastle have a wide variety of high quality facilities for teaching and research in the arts.

Computing Services

They have excellent computing facilities for you to use at Newcastle, and they provide support to help you make the most of them.

Cultural Facilities

More than 200,000 visitors annually are drawn to Newcastle cultural attractions, which include an art gallery, a theatre, three museums and programmes of public lectures and concerts.

Farms, Field Stations and Gardens

The University has two farms, various field stations and a botanical garden, which are used for teaching and research in the agricultural, biological and environmental sciences.

University have a wide range of well equipped laboratories that support their research and teaching in all three faculties.

Language Facilities

University of Newcastle have language facilities for learning or enhancing your knowledge of foreign languages as well as English language courses for those international students who may need them.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences has a wide range of state-of-the-art laboratories and other facilities to support its teaching and research.

Newcastle is one of the top 10 universities for sport in the country. They have excellent facilities covering nearly every sport you can think of, including their own 18 hole golf course!

Student Support Services

University of Newcastle aim to give students the maximum possible support while studying here, through their tutor system, Student Advice Centre, Student Counselling Service and other specialist services for particular groups of students.

Support for Teaching and Learning

To support teaching at Newcastle University they have made on-going investment in a wide range of excellent facilities. As would be expected, Newcastle has numerous laboratories and libraries, but they also utilize their more unusual assets to support teaching: farms, museums and gallery, botanical garden, observatory, recording studios, and even a sea going ship are all used to enhance their teaching.

Workshops

The University has a variety of workshops for teaching and research purposes in both science and the arts.

Accommodation and Hospitality Services - Access for All

The University has a range of accessible accommodation it can offer either within traditional catered halls or self-catered flats and houses, most of which is close to the University. For general site information eg accommodation type, facilities available, charges etc.

Catered Accommodation

Castle Leazes Halls of Residence

  • Eight wheelchair accessible single study bedrooms located on the ground floor of Freemen's Hall. All are fitted with induction loops, vibrating pillow, fire alarm strobe warning light, amber doorbell beacon, pull cord alarm connected directly to Reception and wardrobe pull down hanging bracket. There are also adjacent adapted kitchen, bathroom/shower and toilet facilities fitted with pull cord alarms connected directly to Reception.

  • Two single study bedrooms at third floor level in Havelock Hall fitted with vibrating pillow and fire alarm strobe warning light.

  • Two fully accessible toilets are located in the Central Building close to all communal facilities and a vertical platform lift providing access to Freemen's Hall dining room.

Henderson Hall

  • One study bedroom at first floor level fitted with vibrating pillow and fire alarm strobe warning light, BT phone line and wardrobe pull down hanging bracket. A toilet and bathroom adapted for wheelchair users is located on the ground floor. There is a ladies accessible toilet adjacent to Reception.

Self-Catered Accommodation

Equipment available

University of Newcastle aim to make everyone's stay comfortable and pleasant and will assist, wherever possible, with the provision of other equipment eg mini-cool unit to store medication, adjustable bed, adjustable height desk, talking microwave, braille microwave.

Leazes Terrace - Postgraduate Hall

  • One ensuite room fitted with vibrating pillow and fire alarm strobe warning light. An induction loop is fitted at Reception.

University Flats, Richardson Road

  • One flat adapted for wheelchair users with accessible shower room and toilet, induction loop in common room for TV.

  • One study bedroom fitted with vibrating pillow and fire alarm strobe warning light.

  • Three flats adapted for persons with impaired hearing, induction loop in common room for TV

  • One study bedroom in each flat fitted with vibrating pillow and fire alarm strobe warning light.

26 Claremont Place

  • One flat with bathroom, kitchen and staircase fitted with disabled access aids for residents with mobility difficulties.

Windsor Terrace

  • One fully accessible flat.

  • One flat with fully adapted bathroom.

Leazes Parade

  • One flat with fully adapted bathroom.

Hardware Loans Scheme

The Hardware Loans Scheme stocks a wide range of accessibility equipment which can be borrowed by staff, students and visitors of the University for different lengths of time depending on requirement and availability.

Car Parking

Designated parking spaces are available at all accommodation sites for disabled persons free of charge.

The Service's Disability Working Group works in close collaboration with the University's Disability Support to review accessibility arrangements and implement new initiatives to continuously develop and improve facilities across all the sites. Recent achievements include:

  • The implementation of the University Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) for students with certain impairments,

  • A central pool of adaptation equipment for shared use across the sites,

  • External signage and designated disabled parking bays close to Reception Entrance Points,

  • Induction loops to all Reception Desks,

  • Tactile paving and handrails to entrance points.

University of Newcastle is also committed to increasing disability awareness across their service to meet the needs and expectations of disabled customers through delivery of a wide range of workshops to all their staff.
