About NMIT:
Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology is the largest
tertiary institution at the top of the South Island of New
Zealand. Each year nearly 3000 students from the Nelson and
Marlborough region, as well as from all around New Zealand and
overseas, study at one of the three campuses in Nelson, Richmond
and Blenheim.
They come to enjoy a great student lifestyle with
the best sunshine hours, a stunning coastline, an abundance of
national parks and a lively arts scene. But most of all, they come
to obtain a quality qualification of their choice.
The beginnings of NMIT date back to 1904. It is a
government guaranteed institute with its degrees, diplomas,
certificates and other qualifications recognised by the New Zealand
Qualifications Authority.
NMIT Campuses:
Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology has campuses in
Nelson and Blenheim, each offering programmes that complement
the business and industry demands of the area.
Nelson Campus:
NMIT's Nelson campus is situated just a few minutes' walk from
Nelson's vibrant city centre and within easy driving distance of
the many attractions of the Nelson region.
Marlborough Campus:
NMIT's Marlborough campus is
situated in the region's commercial hub of Blenheim.
Specialising in viticulture and aviation, NMIT Marlborough
offers almost 20 full time programmes as well as part time and
short course options. The attractive campus boasts an on-site
vineyard, a library, the training hair salon "Hair Savvy", the
beauty salon "Enhance" and a student cafe.
Nelson Region:
The Nelson-Tasman region is an irresistible blend of lifestyle
and stunning landscapes found at the top of the South Island.
The urban centres of Nelson and
Richmond are surrounded by three national parks, Abel Tasman,
Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes, encompassing golden sandy beaches to
rugged mountain terrain. They are blessed with some of New
Zealand's highest sunshine hours.
The region's economy is based on the
'big four' industries: seafood, horticulture, tourism and
forestry. The region has low unemployment with opportunities for
seasonal or part time work. Or when you need a break, you can
take part in some of the many leisure activities on offer.
Marlborough
Region:
The Marlborough Region embraces three distinct landscapes
from the breathtaking blue-green waters of the Marlborough
Sounds to central Marlborough, the vineyard country famed for
its award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, through to the stunning high
country of the Awatere Valley and south along the Pacific Coast
to Kaikoura, home to whales, seals and dolphins.
The region's commercial hub is
Blenheim, a town of 35,000 people. It regularly gets some of the
highest sunshine hours in New Zealand and has low rainfall. Its
economy is based on wine, aquaculture and tourism particularly
in and around the stunning Marlborough Sounds. It is home to the
Marlborough Food and Wine Festival and the Omaka Airshow.
Living in a Homestay:
Every New Zealand house is different and every family has a
different lifestyle. Some of you will be living very close to
NMIT and some of you will have further to walk. Some will have
very large bedrooms and some will have smaller bedrooms. Some
houses will be very new and some will be older. You can be sure
your homestay will not be the same as anybody else's. New
Zealand houses do not have fluorescent lights - they are more
yellow and less bright than in many countries and it will take
you some time to adjust.
If you are not sure about what is OK
and what is not OK you must ask your homestay family or check
with the International Liaisons. It is not a good idea for you
to move from your homestay in the first month because this is
when you get used to being in New Zealand culture. |
