Overview
Founded in 1911 by what is now The United Methodist Church, SMU opened in 1915 with support from Dallas leaders. The Southern Methodist University mission statement is to create, expand, and impart knowledge through teaching, research, and service, while shaping individuals to contribute to their communities and excel in their professions in an emerging global society. Among its faculty, students, and staff, the University will cultivate principled thought, develop intellectual skills, and promote an environment emphasizing individual dignity and worth. SMU affirms its historical commitment to academic freedom and open inquiry, to moral and ethical values, and to its United Methodist heritage. It is a private university of 11,000 students near the center of Dallas. It offers strong undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs through seven schools. It is one of the few universities to have a voting student member of its Board of Trustees and consistently ranks in the top third of national universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University's 10 libraries house the largest private collection of research materials in the Southwest. In SMU a student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1.

One of the great strengths of SMU is its location in Dallas, a vibrant international city. SMU is located five miles north of downtown Dallas near the intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and Mockingbird Lane, a few blocks from a light rail station. A park-like campus only minutes from downtown Dallas.

Scholarships
More than 70 percent of SMU undergraduates receive some sort of assistance in the form of merit- or need-based award packages. If student submit Application for Admission by the mentioned deadlines (November 1 for Early Action; January 15 for Regular Decision; April 1 for transfers) then he/she will be automatically considered for University wide merit and leadership scholarships offered by SMU.
First-year students should apply by January 15 for priority consideration for merit and leadership scholarships.
Transfer students should apply by April 1 (Fall entry) or November 1 (Spring entry) to be considered for merit scholarships.
If you excel in academics and leadership, there are opportunities for merit scholarships
Transfer Scholarships
All require a minimum of 50 transferable hours and at least a 3.5. cumulative transferable GPA, although the more valuable scholarships require a 3.7 cumulative transferable GPA.

Intake
All prospective undergraduate students must complete the SMU Application for Admission, accompanied by a $60 nonrefundable application fee, by the following deadlines:
First-year candidates
November 1 Early Action admission
January 15 Regular Decision and Merit Scholarship admission
February 15 CSS/PROFILE due
February 15 Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
March 15 Spring Decision admission (on a space-available basis only)
