University Of Cumbria

Overview

The University of Cumbria was formed on 1st August 2007 formally, from an amalgamation of St Martin's College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts, and the Cumbrian campuses of the University of Central Lancashire. The University has campuses in Carlisle, Newton Rigg, Penrith, Ambleside and Lancaster and a specialist teacher-education centre in London. The University also has strong links and close partnership working with the four FE Colleges in Cumbria (Lakes Colleges, Furness College, Carlisle College and Kendal College) to enable HE delivery locally across the county. In addition, the University is the lead institution of Cumbria Higher Learning, a Distributed Learning Network for Cumbria.

The University offers a very high quality learning experience in a supportive environment which enables students to achieve their personal and professional potential wherever they study. It is committed to learning which is innovative, flexible and student centred and which utilises the latest technology. The University also works closely with employers, schools, colleges and agencies in the region to offer research, scholarship and knowledge transfer excellence which shapes and supports social, cultural and economic development in support of the inclusion sustainable communities agenda.

Vision

Working closely with its partners and stakeholders, the University of Cumbria is committed to providing an outstanding student experience, and to bringing the transformational and opportunity-giving qualities of Higher Education to all who can benefit. Key to this is the development in all of our students of new skills and knowledge, in a supportive learning environment, which will equip them for success and fulfilment throughout their lives wherever they live and work.

Mission

Fully committed to inclusivity and accessibility, the University of Cumbria will reflect the Christian values and the creative traditions on which it was founded, and will promote an environment where diversity is celebrated and inventiveness flourishes with a mission.

Location & Facilities

Just past the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (on the right), take the first exit at the large roundabout onto Bowerham Road. The entrance to the campus is 300 yards on the left, opposite Bowerham Primary School.

From the south leave the M6 at junction 33 and follow the A6 into Lancaster. At the first roundabout, take the third exit onto Bowerham Road. The entrance to the campus is 300 yards on the left, opposite Bowerham Primary School.

By rail:

Lancaster is on the main west coast rail line from London to Glasgow. The campus is a 20 minute walk or short taxi ride away.

Accommodation:

Most first year students opt to stay in halls of residence. With almost 1100 rooms available across our campuses, you have an excellent chance of obtaining a place provided you apply before mid-June in the year your course starts. To facilitate your studies internet access is available from every halls bedroom. Most students have their own study bedroom (some rooms are twins) and share a kitchen, lounge and bathroom. Many are en-suite and a member of the residential life team is on hand to help.
