Overview
Founded as the Dundee Technical Institute in 1888, later converted into a centrally funded institution with full degree-awarding powers (including research degrees) from the 1970s onwards. It is referred to as an "industrial university" by the Scottish Office as early as 1902, and allowed to use formal university title from 1994.
Mission- The mission is to provide a distinctive and high-quality university education that empowers our graduates socially, culturally and economically, and to generate new knowledge and learning that reinforces national competitiveness.
Abertay is right at the heart of Dundee, combining all the advantages of a close-knit campus with the buzz of city centre life. All of the buildings are within a quarter of a mile of each other, as are shops, bars, clubs, cinemas and theatres, and its just a few minutes' walk from the bus and train stations.
Some details you may cover under this section are the Year of Establishment & Mission of the Institute, the various Accreditations, Ranking & Recognitions, whether Public or Private Institute, USP’s for International Students & International Student Strength & also the Courses which are highly demanded by Students.
Location & Facilities
Abertay isn’t just a great place to be a student – the University is also home to world-leading research teams, whose discoveries are hailed internationally. It is a top-rated university in Scotland for environmental science research, with leading-edge initiatives such as the Abertay Centre for the Environment promoting ‘green’ business practices
Dundee sits in a spectacular setting, overlooking the River Tay estuary on Scotland’s east coast. Once a heavily industrial - and famously seafaring - town, it has transformed itself in recent years into a lively, friendly, safe and affordable city, which is the regional centre for one of the most unspoilt and affluent parts of the UK.
Students new to Dundee normally look for somewhere affordable, comfortable and within daily travelling distance of the University. There are a variety of different types of student residential accommodation, either privately owned or directly leased by the University. Staying in any of the University of Abertay’s halls of residence means that you can look forward to living in modern, comfortable surroundings will all the facilities you need to make your stay enjoyable.
The University’s five self-catering residences offer a wide range of high quality accommodation. The size of the accommodation varies from single bedsits to multi-occupancy flats, and it is all located within easy walking or travelling distance to the University.
The self-catering flats are furnished and complete with standard kitchen facilities. There are now a significant number of self-catering flats available with en-suite facilities. There is a 24-hour campus security service and an on-call caretaker. Alloway Halls, where many of our younger students stay, also has a resident caretaker on-site.

Overseas students (non-UK/EU) liable to pay the full-time overseas tuition fee, and who are commencing study of a full-time undergraduate Honours degree and intending to complete all four years of the course, can apply for the Abertay Achievers’ Scholarship.
This scholarship covers the difference between the overseas tuition fee (currently £9,250) and the home students' tuition fee (currently £1,820) in the final (fourth) year of an undergraduate degree course for those who have successfully completed the first three years of the course at Abertay (meaning that such students would be eligible to pay only the home tuition fee rate in their fourth year of undergraduate study).
