Overview

Created in August 2008, following the merger of Manchester College of Arts and Technology (MANCAT) and City College Manchester. The Manchester College is based at many sites across the city of Manchester in England: from Moston and Harpurhey in the North to Wythenshawe and West Didsbury in the South, as well as several locations in the city centre. Each site has its own specialist, cutting edge facilities and resources within a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

The Manchester College will raise aspirations, expectations and achievements to enable economic success and social inclusion within the City of Manchester and beyond, by delivering world class education and vocational training for individuals, communities and employers.

Why City college Manchester?

  • Training Quality Standard-Awarded Part A certification for overall employer responsiveness and two Part Bs for industry expertise in automotive and construction provision.

  • College Restaurant of the Year-Two of the college’s training restaurants have won the    awards in Restaurant Magazine’s College Restaurant of the Year competition. In 2009 the Moston campus training restaurant, ‘The Restaurant at Ashley Lane’, won the regional final. In 2008, the college’s Openshaw Campus restaurant ‘Bistro East’ won the national final. The competition aims to assess and reward the valuable, practical skills that hospitality and catering students learn in the realistic working environment that college restaurants provide.
    • Award winning architecture-The college’s North Manchester Sixth Form College and North City Library building at Harpurhey is designed to be an inspiring environment for students, while achieving environmental excellence in design and construction. The building has won several awards
    • Northwest Business Environment Awards 2007 (awarded to Walker Simpson Architects, who designed the building)
    • Silver award, Best Public Building, Roses Design Awards 2006
    • RIBA Learning and Skills Council Further Education Award 2006
    • The building is also used as an exemplar for Manchester and Salford’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programmes, making it the potential blueprint for local educational developments in the future.

Location & Facilities

 

Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England.It is the seventh-most populous local authority district in England. Manchester is situated in the south-central part of North West England, fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south and the Pennines to the north and east.

Central Manchester:
The Nicholls Campus offers

  • A Levels in sports, science and maths
  • vocational courses in health and social care, business, IT, sports, science and maths
  • access courses
  • ESOL courses for adults
  • skills for life and independent living

 

The campus is the base for sports academies in football (including a girls' football academy), rugby, cricket and basketball. Excellent sports facilities include a football centre with a full size grassed pitch and synthetic five-a-side pitches, a sports hall and fully equipped gym.
Other excellent facilities at the Nicholls Campus include

  • a learning resource centre (LRC)

  • a student common room with pool tables, table tennis, a CD player and a quiet seated area

 

Radio Regen-Manchester-based charity Radio Regen enables the residents of Manchester, Salford and the north west to get on air. Its stations are staffed by volunteers from the local broadcast areas, who receive training in radio production that is delivered in conjunction with The Manchester College.

 

Shena Simon campus-The vibrant, city centre Shena Simon Campus specialises in the performing arts and media. Courses include

  • acting, dance and musical theatre
  • music courses for 16-19s
  • interactive media
  • photography
  • visual arts and design

 

In addition, the campus offers

  • a range of A Levels
  • English as an Additional Language (EAL) courses for 16-19s

 

The Grade 2 listed building houses state of the art facilities and equipment, including

  • rehearsal rooms and recording studios, equipped with instruments and mixing/recording equipment
  • IT suites designed for music and media production
  • DJ skills booths
  • photography studios and a darkroom
  • two theatres – the Waterside Theatre and the Sackville Theatre
  • a threatre set production workshop
  • science labs
  • dance studios
  • a reference library for art and design, as well as a fully stocked learning resource centre

 

 

St.John's Center

The St John's Centre is a modern campus in a central location, delivering courses in

  • business and finance
  • accounting (Association of Accounting Technicians – AAT)
  • law (Institute of Legal Executives – ILEX)
  • languages
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
  • Access courses

The building is equipped with all the latest technology and communications facilities for teaching and learning. Its contemporary design features an atrium that floods all four floors of the centre with natural light. The ground floor has a large open plan area designed for socialising, eating and surfing the net. The first floor is occupied by an extensive learning resource centre and side rooms for quiet study.
The Center for Music-This specialist centre for music features sound-proofed rehearsal spaces and extensive studio equipment including mixing desks. Courses are offered in the areas of music technology and popular music.

 

East Manchester:
Malcolm House and Fernside-Malcolm House and Fernside are The Manchester College's residential conference and training centres. Both centres have conference room facilities, lounges, bedrooms and kitchens (with catering staff on hand to meet hospitality requirements).


Openshaw Campus- he campus offers a wide range of well-established vocational courses across all levels of study. Teaching and learning facilities include

  • IT suites for multimedia courses
  • an award winning training restaurant
  • an architect designed mobile unit for retail courses, fully equipped to enable retail learners to experience a real life working environment
  • recording studios and an outdoor amphitheatre for live music performances
  • workshops for construction, engineering, electrical and automotive studies
  • hair and beauty salons
  • a suite for corporate health and safety programmes

The Openshaw Campus features many facilities that are open to the community as well as staff and students

  • the library and learning resource centre (LRC) is a Manchester City Council public library, so its resources are available to the whole community
  • everyone can pamper themselves with treatments at our hair and beauty salon
  • the fully equipped gym and fitness centre is open to all and is open on Saturdays
  • our training restaurant – Bistro East – offers everyone the chance to experience fine dining at a reasonable price

 

The Preston Campus- The Manchester College's Preston Street training unit provides courses for 16-18 year olds in

  • automotive skills
  • general construction skills
  • engineering
  • formwork
  • scaffolding

 

The college is one of only a few centres providing scaffolding training, in facilities that create a real world working experience.


The Manchester School of Building-The School of Building is one of the north west’s top centres for all aspects of construction training. Based at the Welcomb Street centre, the college’s Openshaw and Moston campuses, and several specialist centres, the School of Building provides training throughout Manchester.Nearby, at Preston Street, there is a centre with specialist provision for scaffolding, automotive, engineering, formwork and general construction courses for 16-18s.


The college is one of only a few centers providing scaffolding training, in facilities that create a real world working experience.

 

North Manchester:
Abraham moss campus
Moston Campus-  Moston Campus has an excellent reputation for creative programmes, particularly in art and design, fashion and furniture crafts. The centre also offers courses in hospitality and catering, automotive studies and construction. Most courses offered are vocational but students on advanced level courses will have the opportunity to complement their main programme by studying one of the four AS/A Levels offered at this centre.


The Manchester College has invested £2 million in the campus, enhancing facilities for students and members of the public, such as

  • a new cafeteria and coffee shop
  • improved nursery facilities and a sensory room
  • new hairdressing and beauty therapy suites and salons
  • a fully equipped gym with spa and wet room facilities
  • a professional studio for media styling and special effects make up

 

North Manchester Sixth Form-This centre offers a large and varied selection of AS/A Level courses, as well as vocational courses in

One Central Park-One Central Park offers cutting-edge research, development and educational facilities in a purpose-built technology focused building on the UK's first large-scale urban information and communications technology business park. Specialist facilities include fully equipped ICT training suites, CISCO labs and wireless networking capabilities.

 

St. Matthew's Center-The St Matthew’s Center provides the ideal learning environment for a wide selection of foundation, intermediate and advanced level vocational courses. The building features a modern beauty salon and hair studio, both of which reflect the style of modern high street salons.

 

South Manchester:
Fielden campus-We have invested £9 million into our Fielden Campus to turn it into a specialist centre for adult education with a host of new learning environments and facilities for students. The campus offers skills for employment and personal development, with many of our courses being developed in response to the growth of particular industries, like hospitality and catering, facilities management and creative and digital media. We also offer a limited number of hospitality and catering courses for 16-19 year olds at this centre. The Fielden Campus is home to Restaurant 141 – a relaxed and sophisticated fine dining establishment that provides quality gourmet food and the highest levels of service.

 

Forum Learning

The Forum Learning Centre specialises in vocational and pre-employment learning for adult learners. It is run in partnership with the Manchester Adult Education Services and the Manchester Library Services to offer adult learners the opportunity to gain vocational qualifications and prepare for employment.

 

 Northenden Campus

Whythenshawe Campus

The Wythenshawe Campus is a £28.5m development which offers a wide range of academic and vocational learning opportunities in south Manchester and beyond for both school leavers and adults. Students can currently study courses in construction, plumbing, heating and ventilation, painting and decorating, scaffolding and vehicle maintenance. Plus, from September 2011, there will be even more opportunities for school leavers with the opening of a four storey sixth form teaching block and performing arts and recording studios. The Wythenshawe Campus is also home to the Sustainability Centre which will disseminate best practice in sustainable low carbon design and 21st century building techniques.

Guidance and Welfare-help to choose the right course for you
