The University was founded as a direct result of a campaign in the late nineteenth century for higher education provision in Wales .
Bangor is located in a breathtaking landscape with panoramic views and is rich with history, culture and charm.
The city is home to over 13,500 people and there are currently 10,000 students studying at the University.
At the heart of the city is the ancient St Deiniol's Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedral sites in Britain. The Cathedral was founded in 525AD some 70 years before Canterbury.
The University plays an important part in the city's history and identity. It was built in 1884 following funding by local quarrymen who volunteered to give some of their wages towards providing a better standard of higher education.
Bangor's coastal location means it has impressive views and is connected to the Isle of Anglesey by two picturesque bridges- the Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Brid
Location & Facilities
The University was originally based in an old coaching inn called the Penrhyn Arms. In 1903, the city of Bangor donated a 10-acre site overlooking the city at Penrallt for a new building, and substantial sums of money were raised by local people to help meet the cost. The foundation stone for this was laid in 1907, and four years later in 1911 the main building was opened, together with some arts and social science buildings and part of the Library.
The University has an impressive range of library, IT and subject specific learning resources and facilties, as you would expect from a high quality institution.
