Overview
The University of Auckland was formally opened on 23 May 1883 as Auckland University College, part of the University of New Zealand. Today, The University of Auckland is the largest university in New Zealand, hosting over 40,000 students on five Auckland campuses. Almost all teaching staff engage in research which attempts to advance the frontiers of knowledge and understanding, and around 5000 students are enrolled for postgraduate studies, 1200 of whom are undertaking doctorates.
The University of Auckland is New Zealand's leading university and is the only one ranked among the world's top 100 universities by the Times Higher Education - Quacquarelli Symonds (THE-QS) World Rankings of Universities. The University of Auckland has a strong international focus and is the only New Zealand member of Universitas 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities - international consortia of research-led universities. Today more than 4,000 students from 93 countries choose to study here.

Location & Facilities
Campuses:
The University of Auckland spans five main and three satellite campuses. Its main City Campus incorporates important historic buildings such as Old Government House alongside striking modern architecture, notably the new Business School.
City:
The University of Auckland's main City Campus is located in the heart of Auckland, which is ranked fourth out of 215 world cities for quality of living in the 2009 Mercer Quality of Living Survey (see www.mercer.com/qualityofliving).
Auckland's harbour setting, magnificent beaches and verdant bush make it a great place to study and work, while the University's close proximity to New Zealand's major business city enables staff and students to rub shoulders with leading practitioners in their field. For example, medical students work alongside leading specialists at Auckland City Hospital while the Faculty of Law is within walking distance of the courts and major legal firms. The Business School has a close relationship with leading Auckland companies and academics from our Faculty of Engineering, School of Population Health and School of Architecture and Planning serve on think-tanks helping to shape the city's future.
Accommodation options:
Our catered Halls of Residence and self-catered residences offer you quality living facilities and a great lifestyle while you are studying. Students from all over the world are welcome at all our residences. We can cater for specific cultural requirements, such as halal food or single gender accommodation, so you can feel comfortable in your new environment.
