Overview

The Universal College of Learning or UCOL is an award winning, government-funded institute of technology and polytechnic (ITP) with three campuses in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand.


Established in 1902, when the Palmerston North Technical School was founded. The school later became the Palmerston North Technical Institute, then the Manawatu Polytechnic, before becoming UCOL in 1998.


Students from over 30 different countries are currently studying at UCOL, from countries including India, China, Malaysia, Philipines, Fiji, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, USA and Hong Kong.

Location & Facilities

Campus:

UCOL has three large and well equipped campuses in Palmerston North, Wanganui and Masterton, in the central and lower North Island of New Zealand. The Wanganui is a State-of -Art school of Design.

 

City:

Palmerston North, known as Student City, is a green and lively city with a strong retail, arts and cafe culture. It’s within an easy two hour drive of New Zealand’s capital city Wellington. The lifestyle is easy and affordable. The city is a major rail centre and has excellent road connections, north, south, east and west. Tha campus is situated in the heart of Palmerston North and is one of the city’s landmarks.  Whanganui region with a population of 78,000, is located on the west coast of the North Island. It is also close to Wellington


Accommodation:

UCOL Palmerston North has two types of accommodation. These are homestays, or accommodation @ The Hub. The cost of home stay accommodation in Palmerston North is $200.00 per week. @The Hub Accommodation complex offers apartments and dorms in the centre of town, close to UCOL.


Whanganui UCOL has student accommodation available. The cost is approximately $110.00 (NZ$) per week - this covers everything except telephone, bedding and food. There are plenty of Backpackers and Homestay available in Wairarapa. Accommodation costs approximately $168 per week.

 

Student Support

Extensive student support services are available. Like, The Association of Students' at UCOL, AS@U, provides representation, advocacy and services to all UCOL students. The Students' Association fee is a compulsory fee for all students studying at UCOL.
Personal Education Plans helps students make the right choices that match your style of learning with the right course of study by the PEP Advisors who are located on all campuses.


Learning Support:

Academic Counsellors provide learning support to help improve your study outcomes with assignment checks, one-on-one assistance, helping with learning difficulties, using computers and group tutorials.


Health Centre:

To look after student health needs with free doctor and nurse service. Confidential Clinical Counselling is also available.


Free Bus Services:

UCOL, in conjunction with Horizons Regional Council, provides students and staff with free travel on Palmerston North and Wanganui urban bus services - UCOL ID cards must be shown when boarding.
