North Tec

Overview

Originally opened as the Northland Community College in 1978.In 1987 Northland Community College changed its name to Northland Polytechnic and to NorthTec in June 2006.
NorthTec is the region's largest provider of tertiary education, with campuses and learning centres in Whangarei city and Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands, and Learning Centres in Rawene on the shores of the Hokianga, Kaikohe and our northernmost site in Kaitaia. NorthTec remains the only Northland-based Tertiary Education Institute (TEI) that provides programmes from foundation to degree level.
These goals set out NorthTec’s high level aspirations.

  • Be recognised in and beyond our region as a leading tertiary education provider.
  • Anticipate and meet changing career and community education needs.
  • Encourage and increase participation in tertiary learning by reducing barriers or barriers to access.
  • Encourage and facilitate regional economic and community development including co-operation in applied research, innovation and knowledge transfer.
  • Demonstrate quality provision by national and international benchmarking key success factors.
  • Achieve a sound financial platform for effective educational delivery.
  • Expand the range of commercial activity to support the institute’s core educational purpose.
  • Advance educational opportunity for Māori, respecting the intent of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Cooperate with Pacific and other communities nationally and internationally to assist them to meet their educational needs.
  • Underpin the institute’s goals by providing for the development of staff and by operating as a good employer

NorthTec (Northland Polytechnic) is a government funded
tertiary institution

The council is the governing body of NorthTec and is constituted as follows.
The NorthTec Council is the governance body for the polytechnic. The Council provides oversight for the financial management and operational performance of NorthTec ensuring that NorthTec achieves its objectives, maintains the quality of the its programme delivery and meets the obligations imposed upon it by central government through the Tertiary Education Commission.
NorthTec programmes are highly regarded by New Zealand employers. All
are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), and
many are internationally recognised.
NorthTec degrees are accredited to allow access to postgraduate studies at
most universities around the world, and NorthTec programmes pathway to
selected degrees at Massey University, Auckland University of Technology,
the University of Waikato and Victoria University of Wellington.
About The university:

  • NorthTec is a New Zealand Government (ITP) owned Institute of Technology. Students will receive a quality education that meets the high standards set by the New Zealand Government.
  • International and National recognition of NorthTec qualifications.
  • NorthTec’s expert academic staff come from around the world where many have taught in Institutes of Technology and Universities. They are warmly welcoming of international students and passionate about teaching. Many of NorthTec’s staff have international reputations in their fields.
  • Although 17,000 students studied at NorthTec in 2010, class sizes remain small and there is greater interaction with the lecturers. In the case of hospitality, NorthTec assigns 2 students to 1 stove. In the English Language class, the maximum class size is 12 students.
Near the end of course completion, NorthTec helps their international students to prepare to find employment if they wish to stay in New Zealand. We show our students how to find a job, how to prepare their CV’s and how to prepare for an interview.
