Overview
Historically, McMaster University is the outgrowth of educational work initiated by Baptists in central Canada as early as the 1830's. Named after Senator William McMaster (1811-1887), who bequeathed substantial funds to endow "a Christian school of learning", the University was incorporated under the terms of an act of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1887.
The new University (housed in McMaster Hall in Toronto) offered courses in arts and theology. Degree programs began in 1890, with degrees first being conferred in 1894.

Location & Facilities
The University is located in Hamilton, Ontario and is the Fourth largest city in Ontario, ninth in Canada. It is 68 kms from Toronto; 71 from U.S. border. No. 7 on a ranking of the best cities in Canada in which to do business (Canadian Business magazine, September 2008). Bordering a major conservation area, the McMaster campus comprises 196 hectares (296 acres), and features 72 varieties of trees and shrubs.
The campus has 45 buildings with a total of 367,027 sq. m. of floor space. The university has Libraries, Museum of arts, Athletics and recreation, Student housing, conference services and Nuclear Reactor.

Scholarships
The Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships (SFAS) will provide bursary assistance related to tuition, books, compulsory fees, equipment and supplies after a student’s own contribution has been assessed and after OSAP (or out-of-province loan) has been assessed. Students who lack resources to cover living and other education-related costs during their study period should apply for bursary assistance.
McMaster ensures that full-time graduate students in PhD programs and in many Master’s programs receive scholarships (awarded annually). A PhD student is normally funded for four years. Students in Master’s programs are usually funded for their first three to six terms depending on the department.
McMaster University has adopted a policy of ensuring that all full-time PhD students receive at least $17,500 per year. Many programs have support levels in excess of this amount. Please contact the person in charge of graduate recruiting in your program of interest to find out more.
