The University of Newcastle is a comprehensive, international university and one of Australia’s leading research institutions. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs through five faculties: Business and Law; Education and Arts; Engineering and Built Environment; Health; and Science and Information Technology.

The University’s student population is just over 30,000, including some 6,000 international students from more than 80 countries studying both on and off-shore. Almost 1,000 students live on the Callaghan campus in three traditional halls of residence as well as a motel style accommodation complex.

Location & Facilities

Newcastle is Australia's second oldest city (after Sydney), is New South Wales' second largest city, and the sixth largest city in Australia. Newcastle combines a country setting with all the advantages of city and beachside living.
The University of Newcastle operates on two main campuses, the largest set on a 140 hectare natural bush land site is at Callaghan, about 12 kilometres west of the Newcastle city centre. The other, located on an 85 hectare site adjacent to national parkland, is on the Central Coast at Ourimbah, about halfway between Newcastle and Sydney. The University’s Conservatorium of Music, Legal Centre and Graduate School of Business are all located near Civic Park in the centre of Newcastle. The University of Newcastle has recently opened its Sydney Presence in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. Postgraduate programs in the high demand areas of business and professional accounting are offered at the Sydney Presence.

Scholarships
The University of Newcastle offers a number of postgraduate research scholarships to support international research candidates.
Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (Endeavour IPRS) The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations of the Australian Government offers Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (Endeavour IPRS) to support international students in high quality research programs at Australian universities.
Intake
The academic year at the University, for the majority of undergraduate programs, is divided into two 14-week semesters with a 5-week break between each. For some postgraduate programs, the University operates a trimester system, details of which are listed below. An enrolment and orientation program for international students is held before the commencement of each semester or trimester.
