The William Light Institute

Overview

Originally established in 1870 as the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries, University of Ballarat (UB) is the third oldest tertiary institution in Australia. It is a leading multi-sector regional university in Australia, acknowledged for its excellence in education, training, research and partnership outcomes. UB has a long and established history for developing industry linkages and for preparing their graduates for employment in Australia and around the world.


The University of Ballarat (UB) is an Australian Federal Government funded public university and a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
The University is divided into two sections; a VET or Polytechnic section known as TAFE and a Higher Education section.
TAFE conducts courses in:

Location & Facilities

It is located in Adeladie. Adelaide is an education city, hosting many of the oldest established learning institutions in Australia and is home to over 20000 international students. Adelaide is a very livable city with most venues no more than 20 minutes away. The central business area is host to a wonderful array of parks, schools, universities, shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues including the famous central market. The city is surrounded on one side by beautiful hills and on the other by 60 kms of pristine beaches. Adelaide has excellent public transport system of trains, trams and buses.


Accommodation


It is important that students live comfortably and with confidence in a new environment to feel secure and achieve their academic goals. Accommodation options in Adelaide include:

There are many student apartments situated in the city centre close to William Light Institute. These are usually self-contained, fully-furnished apartments that are only rented to students. Each apartment consists of a kitchenette, ensuite bathroom, bedroom, television, microwave oven, hot plates, fridge/freezer, living and study area, ceiling fans and heater. Single, twin and double accommodation is available. Most apartments are available for a minimum term of 12 months.

Student apartments vary in cost from approximately $185 to $260 per week. Extra charges apply for electricity, gas, internet access, telephone connection, photocopying, faxes, voicemail and laundry facilities.


Private Rental or Hostel Accommodation


Students may want to find their own place to live, either shared or alone. Options include house, unit/flat or hostels. Costs vary considerably depending on size, quality and location around Adelaide. Renting normally requires you to sign a contract for 6 or 12 months and you will usually be required to pay one month's rent in advance as well as pay a refundable deposit (bond).
